WSDM is a general Web Design Method. It provides a method to design Web systems. While Web systems development became more mature different types of web application emerged, e.g. shopping websites; tourism websites; company websites, etc. The way websites are structured for a particular web application type is very similar. From this application patterns can be (and have been) derived.

The purpose of the thesis is to adapt WSDM so that it supports the use of application patterns. To achieve this, it is necessary (1) to explore existing and new application patterns for web application; (2) to investigate how the use of application patterns will have an impact on the WSDM method and (3) adapt the method if necessary. Next, it should be shown that the adapted method indeed works by applying it to two or more example application, each from a different type.
