Location

From the center of Brussels

There are various options. Depending on where you are exactly, you should decide which option is best for you. Note that tram/bus underground is always the cheapest option: a ticket costs around 2 EURO. The train is slightly more expensive, a ticket costs around 3 EURO (inside Brussels). Taxi's are off course the most expensive, but also the easiest option.

  • By train: From one of the train stations Brussel South ("Midi", "Zuid"), Brussel Central ("Central", "Centraal") or Brussel North ("Nord", "Noord"), take the train with direction "Louvain La Neuve/Université". This train stops (in this order) in Brussel South ("Midi", "Zuid"), Brussel Central ("Central", "Centraal"), Brussel Nord ("Nord", "Noord"), Brussel Schuman, Brussel Luxemburg, and then halts at Etterbeek: you should get off here. When exiting the Etterbeek train station, turn right. Passing by the CitiBank tower, the university campus is ahead (+/- 50-100 meters from the train station). You arrive at entrance 11 (see map below)
  • By tram: Line 23 and 90 pass by the university. Surest thing is to get of at the stop "Etterbeek (B)", which is located in front of the train station. From there, follow the same direction as from the train station to arrive at the VUB campus.

  • By bus: bus 95 and 96 stop 20 meters from the tram stop of Etterbeek (the stop is called "Etterbeek B"), about 30 meters from the train station. See the item "By train" to reach the university campus.

  • By underground (metro): There is a map of the Brussels underground at the website of the MIVB. Take the subway line 5 (see a underground map), direction H. Debroux. Two metro stations are located near the  university campus: "Petillon" and "Delta". We advice to get off at Petillon, since it is easier arriving at the VUB campus from that stop.
Petillon: you should exit the metro station at the front site (direction VUB), and turn right. When you follow the road, the university campus is ahead (5-10 minutes walk). You arrive at the campus at entrance 7 (see map below).
Delta: follow the exit sign "VUB/ULB". You surface on a small road running through the ULB ("campus de la Plaine") (the ULB is the French sister university). Follow this road. Among others, you'll pass one of the ULB restaurants and the ULB science building. After a 5-10 minutes walk you'll arrive at a roundabout enclosed in the ULB campus. Behind this roundabout there is a small road leading up the hill. Go up this road, getting down at the other side you'll arrive at our university (VUB) campus (you are now behind buildings F and G, see the map below). We advice to get off at Petillon, since it is easier arriving at the VUB campus from that stop.

  • By Taxi: ask the driver to go to the following address : Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Pleinlaan 2, 1050 Elsene (Brussels)
The driver should take VUB campus entrance 6, located on the street called 'Triomflaan'. Instruct him/her to follow the driveway to building F, located on the right side (F-G are the tallest buildings). Note: due to ongoing construction works, some entrances are not continuously accessible. If yours is blocked, try another one and see the map below to find your way on the campus. Make sure that the driver brings you to the Flemish university and not to the French one (which has the same name if you translate the name to English)

  • By car: Google maps might give you the direction. Note: due to ongoing construction works, some entrances are not continuously accessible. If yours is blocked, try another one and see the map below to find your way on the campus.

From the airport (Zaventem)

  • By train: There is an excellent connection between Zaventem airport and the center of Brussels: there are 4 trains an hour from the "-1" level of the airport building heading for Brussels North, Brussels Central and Brussels South train stations. You can take a train to Brussels North ("Nord", "Noord"). From Brussels North, you can reach the campus by taking the train with direction "Louvain La Neuve/Université" and get of at Etterbeek. When exiting the Etterbeek train station, turn right. Passing by the CitiBank tower, the university campus is ahead (+/- 50-100 meters from the train station). You arrive at entrance 11 (see map below)
Note however that the last train that leaves from Zaventem for which a connection at Brussels North to Etterbeek is ensured is the train from 22h40 (there are still trams going to Etterbeek until around midnight). The first one in the morning with a connection to Etterbeek ensured is around 6h00.
The train ticket from the airport to Etterbeek will cost you around 3 EURO.

  • By taxi: see above "From the center of Brussels - By taxi"

Location on the VUB Campus

We are located at Pleinlaan 9 (PL9) on the third floor. The figure below shows an overview of the VUB university campus: (our building is labelled '9' at the top of the map). Should you loose track on the university's campus you can always ask someone to call the secretaries office of our department (internal number 33 08; external: +32 2 629 33 08).

Note: VUB should not be confused with ULB (our French sister university and neighbour), but a bewildering walk away if the taxi drops you unwittingly on the wrong campus.
