Elien Paret is a researcher and PhD student at the Web & Information System Engineering laboratory (WISE). She achieved her degree of Master in Master in de Toegepaste Informatica in 2010 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, before that she achieved the degree of Bachelor in de Toegepaste Informatica at the Katholieke Hogeschool Kortrijk.
Her thesis was about "Efficient querying of distributed sources in a mobile environment through source indexing and caching". This thesis was made in the context of the SCOUT: a mobile application development framework, which supports the development of mobile applications that are aware of the user's context (e.g., profile, device characteristics, ..), his current (physical) environment, and the people, objects and places in it.
Currently she is envolved in the CAdE-games project, which investigates the cognitive processing involved in edu-games and its impact on learning and how we can influence these cognitive processes by using adaptive techniques. More in particular we will investigate the impact of the emotional status of a tutor-avatar on the learning effect, as well as the motivational aspects of learning by manipulating task difficulty and attainability of goals.
