Supporting the Development of Designers Rather Than Designs: The Role of AI in Design Decisions for Immersive Analytics
In this position paper, we argue that a primary consideration when introducing AI to immersive analytics should be its impact on designers and its ability to foster the development of their skills. By considering how designers develop their skills and how other AI-based systems aim to positively support user growth, we conclude that AI is currently not serving as an effective teacher. At the same time, there are multiple needs for assistance and teachers in the design process. We exemplify what assisting, while encouraging the development of designers, could look like based on a visionary multisensory extension of AI-driven visualisation recommendation systems used today.
